I have been staying in Uppsala since Feb 2008 and I am kind of starting to love the place. It was tough initially as the cold was really bad and things were worse as I came from the equator. Moreover, the apartment where I lived was small for me and my wife, but we fought it out and now I have moved to a larger apartment.
There is less of problems for people who could eat anything (I mean those who do not have issues with non-veg food) in Uppsala as one gets it everywhere. Comparatively I feel that non-veg items are more cheaper than vegetarian items. But there are places like Willys where one gets really cheap food items. Moreover, it is huge also and there is a variety of food stuff available. For people accustomed to eating spices, there is a shop owned by an Irani person in Vaksala Torg (Sivia MatCenter). It provides everything from Lux soap to Lipton tea. But I think Willys is the best to get out and get your shopping cart full. It is really cheap!!!!! For the more adventurous, one could explore ICA Maxi at Stenhagen. I have never been to that place, but looking at their website and commercials in the newspaper, it appears to be damn cheap. I will mention about it in another blog page.
For alcohol drinkers, its bad news in Uppsala (or Sweden as a country) as all the liquor is regulated by government and hence it is heavily taxed. So any beverage that has alcohol content more than 3.5% v/v is available at Systembolaget. And it is really expensive!!! But people manage to save some money and drink. The bright side of Systembolaget is that one gets tremendous choice of whiskeys, vodkas, beers, wines.
